The Top 5 Churches in Scotland

Scotland is a country that combines a rich, fascinating history, with some of the best scenery anywhere in the British Isles. Check in to a Scottish Highland hotel, and you’ll soon find yourself immersed in a fascinating landscape of forests, lochs and castles.
The country also boasts a breathtaking selection of ancient churches, which are among the most popular attractions on a cultural holiday to Scotland. Here’s a list of five of the most beautiful churches you’ll be able to visit during your trip:

1.Glasgow Cathedral

Glasgow Cathedral deserves to be first on the list, as this is one of the most majestic cathedrals you are ever likely to witness. Dating back to the 13th century, this awe-inspiring medieval building survived the reformation unharmed, and is one of the most elaborate ancient cathedrals in the world today.

2. Rosslyn Chapel

This beautiful 15th century chapel features beautiful stained glass and intricate carvings… as well as being the focus of numerous myths and legends! Some stories link the chapel to the Knights Templar, and the site boasts a fascinating (and sometimes surprising) history. You’ll be able to find out much more at the visitor’s centre, built adjacent to the chapel itself.

3. Dunblane Cathedral

The medieval cathedral in Dunblane is built on the site of an earlier church, founded in the 6th century by Saint Blane. It features a curious blend of architectural styles; with a Romanesque tower creating an unusual contrast to the 13th century nave.

4. Church of the Holy Rude

Located in the town of Stirling, the Church of the Holy Rude is one of the oldest buildings in the area. It was founded all the way back in 1129, although much of the building was reconstructed after a fire in the 15th century. This majestic church features a significant role in Scotland’s history, and was the site for the coronation of Scotland’s King James VI.

5. St Michael's Parish Church of Linlithgow

This magnificent church is a great destination for hotel breaks Scotland, and again, features a rich heritage – this is the church where Mary Queen of Scots was baptised in 1542, and the beautiful building has long been fought over by Scotland’s Protestant and Catholic factions.
