Health Benefits of Saunas and Steam Rooms

It’s no big secret that saunas, steam rooms and other spa facilities have been used throughout history as a means of keeping people both happy and healthy. Whether it’s the relaxing properties of being shut away from the big, wide world in a shed full of steam, or the direct medical health benefits that sweating and steam gives your skin and lungs, you can’t argue that saunas and steam rooms are good for your mind and body. Here are a few benefits to think about next time you’re whiling away your time in a sauna or steam room:

Cleansing

Sweating allows your body to purge the skin of bacteria, dead skin and other foreign bodies. As advanced as our bodies our, keeping our pores open and unclogged is still nigh on impossible without regular care.

If you’re prone to spots or other skin blemishes, you can’t really go wrong by taking a relaxing sauna to purge yourself of natural grease and the detritus of living. This benefit is especially stressed in Scotland, which you’ll find out very quickly if you’re lucky enough to ever go on one of the many spa breaks in Scotland

The immune system

That’s right, as Medieval as this logic sounds, increasing your body temperature beyond the norm on a regular basis can strengthen the immune system, as it simulates having a fever. I suppose this is a little like the Roman emperors taking minute doses of poison in an attempt to increase their resistances should they be deliberately poisoned in the future. However, it’s unlikely that anyone’s going to try and deliberately give you the flu, but it can’t really hurt to work on your immune system once in a while.

Lazy exercise

A session is a hot sauna can be seen as a shortcut to a rigorous workout session. Your heart rate increases, thus giving your heart the same kind of workout that you might expect from a good jogging session. You can even burn off calories from taking regular saunas, which is probably the only way you’ll ever do that by doing absolutely nothing at all. However, if you want to get the heart really pumping, taking a trip to a theme park is also a good idea. Roller coasters and all that walking will do you a world of good, plus it’s so much easier these days with the number of Thorpe Park hotel deals available.
